High-redshift infrared galaxies: mid-infrared properties and evolutionary models

Using the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on board the Spitzer Space Telescope, we have obtained rest frame mid-infrared spectroscopy of two bright submillimeter galaxies. SMMJ02399-0136 at z=2.81 shows a superposition of PAH emission features and a mid-infrared continuum, indicating significant and roughly equal contributions to its bolometric luminosity from star formation and from a Compton-thic...

Mid-infrared luminosity as an indicator of the total infrared luminosity of galaxies

The infrared (IR) emission plays a crucial role for understanding the star formation in galaxies hidden by dust. We first examined four estimators of the IR luminosity of galaxies, LFIR (Helou et al. 1988), LTIR (Dale et al. 2001a), revised version of LTIR (Dale & Helou 2002) (we denote LTIR2), and LIR (Sanders & Mirabel 1996) by using the observed SEDs of well-known galaxies. We found that LIR...

Determining Star Formation Rates for Infrared Galaxies

We show that measures of star formation rates (SFRs) for infrared galaxies using either singleband 24μm or extinction-corrected Paα luminosities are consistent in the total infrared luminosity = L(TIR) ∼ 10 L⊙ range. MIPS 24μm photometry can yield star formation rates accurately from this luminosity upward: SFR(M⊙ yr )=7.8×10 L(24μm, L⊙) from L(TIR) = 5× 10 9 L⊙ to 10 11 L⊙ and SFR = 7.8 × 10 −...

Mid-Infrared Spectroscopy of High-Redshift Submillimeter Galaxies: First Results

We present mid-infrared spectra of five submillimeter galaxies at z = 0.65−2.38 taken with the Spitzer Space Telescope . Four of these sources, at z . 1.5, have strong features from Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their composite spectrum is well fitted by a starburst-dominated M82-like spectrum with an additional powerlaw component consistent with that expected from an AGN. Based o...
